Diamonds. We all know and love them. They are the center piece to just about every engagement ring, but are they really the superior stone? What draws people to them and why are they so popular?
It’s impossible to talk about the popularity of diamonds without looking at its history of incredible marketing. From De Beers 1940’s “a diamond is forever” to the current day “eternity band” symbolizing the continuing affection and appreciation in a relationship, diamonds have some of the best PR staff in existence. That being said, there has to be more to this than simply good marketing.
Working in a jewelry store, I hear all kinds of reasons that people love their diamonds. I mean, how can you not love something so sparkly that still goes with everything? Consumers also love that it appears that the entirety of the world’s glitter is smashed into one beautiful, glimmering stone. That being said, jewelers and jewelry designers love diamonds for different reasons. This stone is incredibly durable and will usually look STUNNING throughout the entirety of its life. We do tend to agree that a diamond goes with everything, but not the same way that maybe you do. A diamond is both a perfect center, but it also makes an incredible accent stone! That’s why you see diamonds used as trim stones in so many different pieces, even if they have a gemstone center.
So, all in all, even if they aren’t your favorite gemstone, diamonds are here to stay and it’s clear to see why.
Stay in the know,
Jewelry Girl
